Walser Areas in Graubünden

Since the first half of the 13th century there have been settlements of Walser in Graubünden. At different times the German speaking settlers moved eastwards after Rätien, over the Oberalppass into Bündner Oberland, where Obersaxon remains as a Walser settlement, from here south in Rheinswald and into the landscape of Davos.

The meagre land, short harvest times and long winters made the farmers’ work very demanding. The climatic as well as the topographic conditions required a high degree of know-how and experience. In order to create an economic coverage, sophisticated ways of working were necessary on the individually and jointly used land.

Walser meeting in Galtür
-
The Walser meeting in Galtür from 8 to 12 September turned out a great fair. Some Walser formed groups and reached the 1600m high lying valley with bikes or on foot. On Friday 10 September, a get-together evening the band “Kanapee” from Großwalsertal played. On Saturday, the village was full of colourful costumes.

Walser Skirace
-
The Walser skirace takes place every two years in a different location. The giant slalom is judged in different age categories. Aditionally, there is an extra score for snowboarders which is particiularly interesting for the youth.

Die Abteilung Fußball des Sportvereines Casino Kleinwalsertal feiert im Jahre 2008 ihr 50jähriges Bestehen. Zu diesem Anlass ist ein Jugendturnier geplant.

Walser way of settling in Vorarlberg

High-lying pastures normally were leased-out to bigger groups of settlers rather than individuals. The land was divided up between the families who built their homes and barns in the middle of the assigned land for economic reasons.

Since 1962, the Walser are celebrating a great meeting every three years. Walser from all over to world come together in a Walser village. Up to 2000 men and women wearing their colourful costumes experience these meetings as highlights. Music-, singing- and local costume groups as well as bands contribute to a cheerful ambience outside and on the festive evening. A shared church service calls for prayer and reflection. A great pageant terminates the meeting.
