Article Religious life of the Walser and the people from Valais
The Walser were pobably even more exposed to nature as their ancestors in the primal homeland: cold, storm, snow and avalanches in winter; dryness and drought in summer. People were needed that could stand up against this challenge. They took this strength and support from the faith that had already been practiced by their ancestors.

Article Safien
Safiental is deeply cut into the soft Bünder slate. The east slope rises in sometimes abrupt and steep cliffs up to a height of 2000m. Therefore, on this side of the valley right at the very back you find the Höfe Zhinderscht and Enthälb at a height of 1800m and in Aussersafien Hof Grafa. All remaining settlements lie on the left side of the valley from Tall, Bäch, over the "Höfe" Camana, Hof, Bruschgaläschg, Zalön, Gün, through to after Neukirch. In the middle of the slope lies the principal village of the valley, which one can realistically call the only settlement. All other settlements lie scattered on the various terraces at a height from 1400m up to 1800m.

Article Scattered Walser settlements in Graubünden
A special characteristic of the industrial way of the Walser and with it the building of stables is the enormous number of stables and hay saved, that are scattered far and wide in the agriculturally used areas. The steep land and the short time available for the hay harvest require the storage of feed to be decentralised.

Article School Education in Saifen
Up until the middle of the 18th century there was no elementary schools open in Safien. However, the Safier could already read and write in the 16th century and this can be proven by the beautiful old handwriting and protocols of the time. It may well be that wealthy families let their children be educated by the parish priest or sent them away to school but is generally assumed that the parents taught their own children to read and write.

Article Settlement methods in Wallis
The Settlement method in Wallis can be illustrated by using the "Dorf" (village) Mühlebach as an example. The compact "Dorf" built in the oldest timber construction methods of Switzerland. In the year 2002, a scientific study funded by the Swiss national fund and the Walliser Bauernhausforschung into the research of timber constructions led to some exciting results. On the basis of the year ring analyses (dendrochronology) twelve very old houses, so called "Heidehischer", were dated between 1381 and 1497.
